The experiment was designed to compare alternative approaches to inviting respondents to complete questionnaires on a smartphone app (the Civique.org platform): a push-to-app approach versus a browser-based recruitment, switching respondents to the app at wave 2. As well as including measures of political attitudes and behaviours from Selects in all three waves, at wave 1, we included measures of willingness to complete digital data collection tasks (e.g., responding via an app, taking photos, enabling GPS tracking) and measures of data privacy concerns. In waves 2 and 3, we subsequently invited respondents to complete these tasks, allowing us to investigate the factors that predict participation.

Outputs

Publications

Roberts, C., Herzing, J.E., Asensio Manjon, M., Abbet, P. and Gatica-Perez, D. (2022). The project used mixed methods to investigate public willingness to participate in surveys using smartphone apps and the potential for using multimodal data collection capabilities of apps to reduce respondent burden. In addition to the Selects-Civique survey experiment, we conducted focus groups to better understand barriers to participation in surveys with smartphone apps, smartphone usage more generally, and people’s concerns about data privacy. We also conducted in-depth usability testing to find out which app features and data collection tasks created challenges for participants.

Outputs

Nirosan Karunarajah – Usability issues of app-based surveys – a potential factor to respond via smartphone app?
