In the context of internal venture development (Burgelman, 1985), last Thursday in my Corporate Strategy class we discussed March’s (1991) idea of the need of organizations and individuals to engage not only in exploitation but also in some exploration.
Does anyone know about work which looks at the relative advantages of specialization (such as structural separation) vs hybrids, that is, between specializing individuals or units in either exploitation or exploration versus having them do some of both?
